English Learner Student Updates

Lau Resource Center News Flash

Dear English Learner Educator,

As we draw to the end of 2022, we are thinking about English learner programs that include strong literacy components. Dr. Pete Goldschmidt, researcher with the Council of Chief State School Officers English learner collaborative opened a recent discussion asking:

“What English learner programs are offered in your schools?”

“How does your program communicate and address the initial skill levels of English learners in listening, speaking, reading and writing?

Effective English learner programs focus upon developing students’ English language proficiency skills across the integrated domains of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Schools gather initial data about each student’s English language needs during enrollment that includes administration of the Language Usage Survey. Schools also indicate the English learner program each student receives in the Education Management Information System and the parent notification letter that is sent after student placement in the English learner program.

To support understanding and consistent use of the Language Usage Survey, a webinar will take place on Thursday, Jan. 12. Read more about this and other English learner resources below.
