About the Franklin B. Walter Award: The Franklin B. Walter award is given to an educator or team from each of the 16 Support Teams in Ohio who have made extraordinary contributions to the education of students with disabilities. The award is given in honor of the late Franklin B. Walter, Superintendent of Public Instruction from 1977 until 1991, a post held longer than any other state superintendent in Ohio’s history. With over 50 years of service as a teacher and administrator, Dr. Walter’s leadership is evident in many of Ohio’s quality educational initiatives and programs. Among these is the development of the nation’s first statewide plan for children with disabilities. The nomination form is due by Friday, April 5, 2019. Completed forms must be submitted to Georgia Pavlic at georgia.pavlic@mvesc.org or must be faxed to 740-439-9310. State Support Team Region 12 will present all nominees from the region with awards for being nominated. Region 12 consultants will review all nomination forms received and will select one student and one educator/team from the region to be the R. A. Horn and Franklin B. Walter Award recipient. The award-winner(s) will be invited to attend a luncheon on June 11, 2019 from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Villa Milano Banquet Center in Columbus. During the luncheon, each award-winning student and educator/team will be recognized and a scripted statement describing the reason the educator/team was nominated will be read. All awardees will be mailed their scripts and awardees attending the luncheon will be mailed their photos from the event.

This award was established 25 years ago by the Ohio Department of Education in honor of the late Dr. Raymond A. Horn, Assistant Superintendent of Public Instruction Emeritus. Acknowledged as a national leader in the field of special education, Dr. Horn devoted more than 60 years of service to improving the quality of life and learning for students with disabilities.
